A Lincoln County man is dead and his wife is in the hospital after a shooting early Sunday morning, Sheriff Steve Rushing said.

Lincoln County Sheriff's Department

Cody A. Newell, 25, was found dead inside his mobile home on Quinn Road in southwest Lincoln County around 12:40 a.m., Rushing said.

A neighbor had called 911 and told dispatchers a woman had come to her house who had been assaulted. The woman had shot her husband, the neighbor said.

Rushing said when the ambulance arrived, Newell was dead. The woman, whose name has not been released because charges have not been pressed, was transported to Kings Daughters Medical Center and from there to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

Rushing said her injuries indicated she had been assaulted. Newell was shot with a handgun, he said.

It's unclear how long the couple had lived at the property on Quinn Road, where they rented the home, but Rushing said a preliminary search showed that there had been no calls to their home in previous years.

Once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the district attorney's office to be sent to a grand jury as is routine, Rushing said, but no charges have been filed pending the outcome of the investigation.
