A Fayette man is in custody, accused of driving the vehicle that struck a pedestrian in Jefferson County on Saturday morning.

Mississippi Highway Patrol  Cpl. Brandon Fortenberry said around 10:30 a.m. troopers responded to a call on Mississippi 553 in Jefferson County. They found a victim identified as Johnny Lee Beverly, 25, of Pascagoula. Authorities said he had been walking on the northbound side of the road when he was struck by an unidentified vehicle that was traveling south on Mississippi 553.

Jawonski Williams, 29, was taken into custody Monday morning and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

Witnesses told police they heard what sounded like an accident around 1:30 a.m., but when they went to check, they didn't find anyone.

Fortenberry stated that the vehicle had crossed the center line to hit Beverly.
