A vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lane of I-55 led to a crash in Madison, Miss.

A fatal head-on collision in Madison claimed the life of a Clinton man Wednesday.

Jason Bradley Busby, 40 died after his 2016 Nissan Maxima was hit by a 2013 Volkswagen Passat, driven by Leronnie Joseph Michael, 32, of Jackson.

Michael was driving the wrong way on Interstate 55, according to Captain Kevin Newman with the Madison Police Department.

At approximately 10:17 p.m. Wednesday, Madison police received a call about a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lane of I-55. While searching for the vehicle, a second call was received of a multiple car accident at the Madison city limits on I-55 near the 107 mile marker.

According to Newman, three witnesses saw the Passat traveling southbound in the northbound lane of Interstate 55 just south of the Highway 463 exit, behind the Malco Theater.

Newman said other northbound vehicles "took evasive action to avoid the on-coming vehicle."

As the Michael neared the south city limits, his Passat collided head-on with Busby's Nissan.

Madison and Ridgeland officers arrived at the scene and discovered four vehicles involved in the collision.

Two other vehicles received collateral damage but neither the drivers or the passengers in those vehicles were injured, Newman said.

Air Care from the University of Mississippi Medical Center transported Busby and Michael from the scene.

Busby later died from his injuries, Newman said.

Michael is currently listed in critical condition at University Medical Center.

The accident remains under investigation by the Madison Police Department. Alcohol and drug testing of both drivers is pending.
