A body discovered by hunters in the woods in northern Hinds County has been identified.

Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart said Tuesday afternoon that the area Larry Evans, 63, was in "leads me to suspect he became disoriented and got bogged down in some heavy thick mud like quicksand."

Evans was found near a deer camp on Cox's Ferry Road, according to a release from Hinds County Sheriff Victor Mason. Hunters stumbled across the body around 8:40 a.m. Tuesday.

Grisham-Stewart said there did not appear to be any trauma to the body, which, she added, appeared to have been there no longer than two days.

"He possibly struggled trying to free himself and could have had a heart attack or had hypothermia from the cold temperatures," she said.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigations is working the scene with Hinds County deputies and the Hinds County coroner.

“It is common for hunters to come across these type situations during hunting season," Mason said. "It is the first few days of deer hunting season with rifles and the hunters are now scouting the woods for those prime hunting spots.”

More information will be released as it becomes available.
