A Pontotoc man and his son drowned Sunday afternoon while on a fishing trip.

Billy Joe Finley, 37, and Grayson Brett Finley, 4, drowned in a private pond off Mississippi 9 South in Pontotoc, according to the county's coroner, Kim Bedford.

The two went fishing in a family member's pond but relatives became concerned when they saw the duo's lone boat and four-wheeler, Sheriff Leo Mask said. The boat was not capsized.

"They found the boat and four-wheeler but they were nowhere around," Mask said.

Relatives called 911 just before 3 p.m.

The dive team with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks responded and pulled the bodies from the water around 6 p.m., Mask said.

Mask said, to his understanding, the pond was approximately 10 to 12 feet in some areas while other parts could be waded across.

Neither Billy Joe Finley or Grayson Finley was wearing a life jacket.

According to Mask, alcohol was not involved and foul play is not suspected.

The father and son were the only ones on the water at the time of the incident. Bedford said details remain unclear.

"I don't think we'll ever know," she said.
