A woman armed with a shotgun was shot by Madison police after she allegedly fired at officers Thursday evening.

At around 5:18 p.m. the Madison Police Dept. responded to a report of a suicidal person at a residence on South Place Drive, according to a news release. Upon arrival officers learned that the woman had already discharged the weapon at another resident of the home. That person was not injured.

Officers cleared the home except for the armed woman who had barricaded herself inside a bathroom. At that point a Special Response Team was called in. The team made contact with the woman then decided to breach the bathroom.

The woman fired at officers who took cover. One officer returned fire with his sidearm striking the woman in her breast and both arms.

The woman was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center where she is listed in stable condition.

The shooting is being investigated by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. The officer who fired his weapon has been assigned to non-enforcement duties pending the outcome of the investigation.
