Man killed in Claiborne County wreck

According to Mississippi Highway Patrol, a man was killed and three other people were hospitalized in an early Sunday wreck.

One is dead and three are injured in an early Sunday wreck.

MHP spokesman Cpl. Eric Henry said in a release that Derrick Williams, 29, of Patterson, was killed on the scene when his Honda Accord was hit head-on by a Buick Enclave SUV.

Authorities said preliminary reports show that at 1:40 a.m., the SUV was traveling north on Mississippi 547 when it appears to have crossed over into the southbound lane. First it allegedly sideswiped a Buick Century, then it hit Williams' Accord head-on.

The driver of the SUV and the driver of the Century were both transported to the hospital. There was a passenger in the front seat of the SUV who was airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center with serious injuries.

Officials said alcohol could have played a factor. Charges have not been ruled out pending lab results from the crime lab.
