The Jackson area has stayed over 70 degrees for almost two and a half months, which shatters a record previously set in 1899.

Temperature reading

National Weather Service Meteorologist Ed Tarver said Monday broke a 72-day streak in which the low temperatures were above 72. In contrast, during that time he said the high temperatures stayed below 100.

The metro area hit a low of 71 a few times during that streak, Tarver said, and the high for June, July, and August was 99 degrees.

The previous record was 47 consecutive days over 70 degrees, which was broken on August 29, 1899.

While the thermometer didn't reach above 100, collectively the temperatures made this summer the 10th hottest on record in Jackson, with records being kept back through 1896.

Tarver noted that Meridian had its warmest summer on record.

Meteorologists said this weekend should bring some rain which could cool things off a little more, but not by much. Tarver said there's no significant cool front coming behind the rain, but it does bring some higher chances for showers and storms.
