Twelve Rankin County students were injured in a wreck during a "senior drive-in" on Monday, officials said.

Police lights are shown in this file photo.

Deputies responded around 7:15 a.m. to a traffic accident at Pine Grove Road and Star Road, Rankin County Undersheriff Raymond Duke said. When they arrived, they found seven vehicles involved in a pile up.

Duke said the students were from McLaurin High School. Twelve students were transported to area hospitals, some by ambulance and some by personal vehicle.

Deputies were told the vehicles were going between 10 and 40 miles per hour.

"We're not sure what caused the chain reaction," Duke said.

The lead vehicle was able to be driven away from the scene, but the other six were towed, he said.

The conditions of the students are not yet available. One student, who was not a senior but was a sibling, had an injury to the mouth, Duke said.
