A man is facing two counts of murder after police say he shot his mother and stepfather at a retirement community Tuesday morning.

Devell Bingham

Jackson Police Department Commander Tyree Jones said Jackie Patterson, 66, and his wife, Diana Patterson, 59, were both found shot in their apartment at Delhaven Manor, an apartment complex for retirees, on Albermarle Road. Delhaven Manor is an elderly and disabled Section 8 community.

Police said Devell Bingham, 39, is in custody in the shooting. He was arrested without incident at the scene.

The couple was found in the bedroom of their apartment. Both had been shot multiple times, and Jackie Patterson also suffered what appeared to be a single stab wound to the chest, Jones said.

No charges have been filed yet, Jones said, but Bingham will be charged shortly. Police said Bingham also lived at the residence with both victims. Jones said he called 911 himself to report the shooting around 10:30 a.m.

Bingham had a dispute with the victims, Jones said, but police have not determined yet what it was.

The retirement community is across the street from Brinkley Middle School, but the school is still out for the summer.

Jackie and Diana Patterson are Jackson's 39th and 40th homicides of 2016, Jones said.
