Moorehead was wanted on charges including rape, aggravated sodomy and burglary — all originating in Georgia, Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Cpl. Eric Henry said.

A woman at the home initially told authorities that Moorehead had left town, but quickly recanted her statement.

When the marshals entered, Moorehead came out of the closet with a shotgun, and gunfire was exchanged. The man then barricaded himself inside the home. Moorehead had said he wasn't coming out alive, according to family members and law enforcement officers at the scene.

Authorities said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will determine who shot first or if the suspect was wounded in the initial exchange.

Several agencies including Hinds County, the U.S. Marshals, the ATF, Jackson Police Department, MHP, and MBI assisted during the standoff, which ended just before 10:30 a.m..

Law enforcement officials blocked off Midway Road Wednesday morning for a standoff with a suspect who barricaded himself inside a home after allegedly exchanging gunfire with a U.S. Marshals Taskforce.
