1 dead, 3 injured in Rankin Jeep wreck
An 18-year-old Rankin County resident was killed and three others were injured after the Jeep they were in flipped several times Monday evening.
Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey said the crash occurred around 5 p.m. Monday when the Jeep was eastbound on Fannin Landing Road. Clinton Cole Kirby was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Rankin County Coroner David Ruth.
It appeared the driver overcorrected, Bailey said, and the Jeep left the road. Witnesses told police it flipped at least three times, ejecting all four young men over a distance of about 50 to 75 yards, Bailey said.
Peyton Horton, Parker Madeo, and Tyler Price remained in critical condition Tuesday, according to University of Mississippi Medical Center officials. Two of the survivors were airlifted to the hospital from the scene, Bailey said.
The accident happened close to the homes of some of the victims, Bailey said, adding that he has contacted their schools to help arrange grief counseling. Kirby was a student at Madison-Ridgeland Academy, and the others attend MRA and Northwest Rankin.
Accident reconstructionists are working to determine the cause of the wreck.
