A jogger on Monday morning discovered human remains while running along Eastgate Drive in Brandon.

Brandon police and fire departments responded around 8:50 Monday morning, where they found the remains of a 50-year-old, white male lying in the ditch between Pavilion Drive and Garden Drive. The cause of death appears to be suicide.

The site where he was found is an area of neighborhoods and subdivisions off of Highway 80 in Brandon.

The man had died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to police, and lived about a block from where his body was found.

Police Chief William Thompson didn't know exactly how long he had been there, but he did say the death appeared to have recently occurred.

The incident is still under investigation, but the cause of death is believed to be suicide.

Authorities are not yet releasing the name of the decedent.

This is a developing story and will be updated when more information becomes available.
