Motorist killed in overnight wreck in Copiah County

The truck was already fully involved when they arrived on the scene, so responders didn't know someone was in it until the fire was put out.

A motorist was killed overnight in Copiah County when it appears a truck left the roadway and caught fire.

Copiah County Coroner Ellis Stuart said he received a call of a one-vehicle accident on Highway 18 just south of Carpenter.

The pickup truck had left the road, he said, and crashed into a tree, then catching fire with one person still inside. Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Trooper Eric Henry identified the driver as Gregory Neal, 32, of Jackson.

Stuart said officials were not immediately able to identify Neal, who was pronounced at the scene. He still would not confirm an identity, saying DNA results will be necessary to confirm it.

Henry said the truck was traveling eastbound when the accident occurred.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames. The truck was already fully involved when they arrived on the scene, so they didn't know someone was in it until the fire was put out.

An autopsy will be done by the state crime lab on Monday, Stuart said.
