The Canton Public School District is disinfecting some schools after an outbreak of scabies.
WAPT reported that Canton schools officials confirmed that there are five and ten cases of scabies.
According to WebMD, scabies is a condition of very itchy skin caused by mites that burrow into the skin. The itching is caused by an allergic reaction to the mites. Scabies spreads very easily from person to person.
With treatment, the scabies mites die and the itching goes away over a period of days to weeks.
McNeal Elementary, Nichols Middle School and Canton High School are affected by the disease.
Canton schools officials have scheduled an update Tuesday.
