An inmate who was found unresponsive in his jail cell in Holmes County Wednesday morning has died, officials said.

Reginald Jones

Sheriff Willie March said Reginald "Reggie" Jones did not respond during headcount Wednesday morning.

"He didn't get up and someone went back and checked on him and he was laying there unresponsive," March said.

Jones, who was serving four years on a sexual battery count, was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he died, March said.

Officials said to their knowledge, Jones was not on any medication, and had only complained of a skin rash recently.

The coroner checked for signs of trauma and there were none, March said. Officials are awaiting results of an autopsy and toxicology test for more information.

Jones had been housed at Holmes County since 2014, and was convicted in Monroe County.

Jones turned 33 on Wednesday, the day he died.
