Bible provides example for elections

Henry Teller, Hattiesburg

In chapter one of the book of Acts in the Bible, there is an account of an election held by the Apostles after Jesus’ crucifixion to fill Judas’ place. The two candidates are Joseph and Matthias. Peter is in charge of the election, and 120 disciples are the electorate. In the Christian spirit of this election, there is absolutely no record of the supporters of one candidate slandering the other candidate, harassing the other candidate’s family or releasing false or misleading information.

Matthias is elected by the disciples, and Joseph remains an active worker in the budding Christian church.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discover Christian Science and founder of the Christian Science Church (not to be confused with Scientology), was a prominent religious leader, prolific writer, and lecturer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and journalists often sought her opinion on U.S. and world issues. During an interview with the Boston Post in 1908, Mrs. Eddy was asked what were her politics? She replied, “I have none, in reality, other than to support a righteous government; to love God supremely, and to love my neighbor as myself.”

Still pretty good advice today when deciding how to cast your ballot.
