CORINTH – The city of Corinth has sold the old West Corinth Elementary School property to the Siege and Battle of Corinth Commission for $1,499.

The commission was the only bidder.

The vacant West Corinth school sits on battlefield property across from the interpretive center, and the National Park Service wants the land to become part of the Corinth Unit of Shiloh National Military Park.

The wording of the solicitation for bids was designed to limit bidders to use of the property only for historical purposes.

The National Park Service wants to use the property to enhance its interpretation of the battle. It gives the park service battlefield land neighboring the interpretive center, provides another venue that can host educational presentations, and provides storage space.

The purchased property does not include the playground area. The National Park Service said it will approach the Corinth School District about obtaining that piece of land.

The city also agreed to declare the playground equipment at the vacant East Corinth Elementary as surplus and to give it to the town of Rienzi, with the stipulation that Rienzi will move the equipment and fill up any resulting holes on the property.

The West Corinth property is the second of three parcels formerly used as elementary schools which reverted to city ownership after they were closed.

Last month, the Easom Outreach Foundation was awarded a long-term lease to the former South Corinth school property for use as Easom Community Center.

The third property, East Corinth Elementary, has drawn interest from Mississippi Action for Progress.
