Chris Smith cared for infant at scene of double homicide

Chris Smith and his wife, Amber, are shown in this undated photo with his step-daughter, Makinzi, 9, and his daughter, Breckyn, 4. Chris Smith and his wife were found dead of an apparent murder-suicide shooting in their Rankin County home, authorities said Thursday.

A Hinds County deputy who is believed to have shot his wife before turning the gun on himself while his two daughters were in the next room once came to the rescue of an infant found at the scene of a grizzly double homicide in Terry.

In 2011, Hinds deputy Chris Smith was one of two officers first on the scene, where they discovered a 7-month-old boy still in the house.

Smith said the baby was crying uncontrollable. "He was soaked in urine-filled clothes," Smith said.

At the time, Smith's daughter, Breckyn, was 18-months-old. He told media then that after discovering the 7-month-old, he instinctively changed the infant's clothes. Fortunately, the child's mother had prepared milk or formula that was in the refrigerator, he said. Once he gave the baby a bottle, the child quickly became calm, he said.

Smith, who lived in Rankin County, is also the step-father to Makinzi Williams, 9. The two girls reportedly told neighbors Thursday morning that Smith and his wife, Amber, were fighting and screaming when they went into a bedroom and locked the door. Rankin County Sheriff Brian Bailey said the neighbor told a 911 dispatcher that the girls reported hearing two gunshots.
