A Lincoln County man who was shot after he allegedly rushed deputies with a gun pointed at them is now in jail.

Sheriff Steve Rushing said Jones was shot when two deputies were responding to a call of a disturbance at his home on Chisholm Drive around 6 a.m. Tuesday. Officials said Jones ran from the home with a weapon pointed at them.

One of the deputies shot at him and he ran back into the house, Rushing said. Jones' mother had gotten safely out of the home and was at a neighbor's house. When he went back into the house, the deputies called for backup and an ambulance, Rushing said.

"At that point we're trying to contact him, his family members are trying to make contact with him in the house, and we don't know if he's injured or what the situation is with him," Rushing said. "We were able to determine he'd been struck, and at that point we went in and secured the scene."

Rushing said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting as is routine for an officer-involved shooting, and the deputies have been given administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation, which is also routine.

The man, who deputies have dealt with before, Rushing said, appeared to have been shot in the leg. He was transported to Jackson for his injuries.

Rushing said neither of the deputies were injured in the incident.
