Edwards tapped as Clarion-Ledger publisher

The Clarion-Ledger

Nathan Edwards will be the next president and publisher of The Clarion-Ledger and Mississippi Media, announced Michael Kane, president of Gannett East Group, on Tuesday.

“Nate brings experience, energy, commitment and a passion for community journalism to the Jackson market. He will make a difference,” Kane said.

Edwards has been general manager of the Hattiesburg American since March.

"I am excited to join the team at The Clarion-Ledger and Mississippi Media; a proven leader for news, information and advertising solutions," Edwards said. "Working with the solid team we have in place, my mission is to continue to grow the organization by exceeding the needs of readers and advertisers alike."

Prior to Hattiesburg, Edwards was vice president of sales for the Augusta Chronicle and classifieds director at the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

Edwards has played a role in helping shape plans that will lead newspapers further into the digital age. In 2014, the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association chose Edwards as part of their NextGen program, which is designed for up-and-comers who represent what the future of newspaper executives will be.

Despite his focus on the digital properties, Edwards said he still maintains a love for print and believes it plays a crucial role in local communities.

"We are capable of amazing things and I look forward to demonstrating how we can make a greater, positive impact throughout the community," Edwards said.

In addition to The Clarion-Ledger, Edwards will also have responsibility for Hattiesburg American, also a Gannett publication.

"Nate will begin the search for a new GM in Hattiesburg immediately and will be there to assist the Hattiesburg team in the interim," Kane said.

Edwards and his wife, Michelle, have a 7-year-old son, Bryson, to whom most of his time outside the office is dedicated. Edwards also enjoys golf and is somewhat of a car fanatic.

Edwards will start Oct. 1.
