Jackson police have identified the skeletal remains found on McCluer Road earlier this month as a missing Simpson County man who went missing in the same area in September.

William Donald McGrew

According to Jackson Police Department Commander Tyree Jones, a DNA match confirmed that the remains were those of William Donald McGrew. There's no official cause of death yet, Jones said.

Police were called to the 400 block of McCluer Road on May 15 when some people searching the woods for their lost dog found the remains, which were confirmed to be human but were not identifiable due to the level of decomposition. It was listed as a death investigation at that point.

Determining that McGrew last went missing in the area of McCluer Road near Boozer Street where he was supposed to meet someone to sell his truck and never returned home, police zeroed in on him as a possible identity for the remains.

On Thursday, the DNA match was returned and it was confirmed to be McGrew. Since there's no official cause of death yet, it's still considered a death investigation, officials said.
