Jeffery Simmons was found guilty of simple assault on Tuesday.

Jeffery Simmons, the top-rated signee in Mississippi State's 2016 signing class, allegedly struck a woman several times on Thursday, according to a WCBI report.

The report cites a video that appears to show Simmons, a five-star defensive end from Noxubee County, hitting a woman on the ground several times. The Clarion-Ledger has confirmed it is Simmons in the video.

UPDATE: Simmons to be suspended one game

Simmons posted an apology on his Facebook account to the Taylor family and specifically Sophia Taylor. The Clarion-Ledger hasn't confirmed that the apology is tied to the alleged assault.

Simmons committed and signed with Mississippi State on National Signing Day, by far the biggest moment during an otherwise quiet day for the program. The five-star defensive lineman has been set to enroll at MSU this summer.

“We are aware of the situation. As more details become available, we will continue to evaluate the situation,” Mississippi State University Public Affairs Director Sid Salter said.
