Ridgeland will be choosing a new police chief again for the fourth time since 2011.

Ridgeland Mayor Gene McGee said that Police Chief Randy Tyler announced his retirement at the city's Board of Aldermen meeting Tuesday.

The 30-year law enforcement veteran has served with the Ridgeland Police Department for 27 years. He was appointed less than a year ago after the former chief Jimmy Houston retired.

"He's been an asset," McGee said. "I've known him most of my tenure as mayor. Ridgeland is a better place because of his service."

Tyler served as interim police chief from May to September of 2011, when Houston resigned to run for Madison County Sheriff. Houston was reappointed to the position when he was defeated in the race for sheriff.

Tyler also brought praise from others who have worked with him.

"Randy has done an outstanding job serving as both chief and assistant chief at for the Ridgeland Police Department," said Madison/Ridgeland District Attorney Michael Guest. "His leadership and hard work will be missed."

Tyler, who began serving as police chief on June 25 of 2014, will serve for a year and five days, retiring on June 30, 2015.

At this point there's no word on who's being considered to be the next leader of the city's police force.
