Ole Miss police release new post-arrest photo

The University of Mississippi Police Chief is speaking out about an incident involving a fan at the Ole Miss- LSU football game in November.

Friday, University Police Chief Tim Potts released a statement on the incident.

Potts said Oxford resident Chris Barnes was asked to leave Vaught-Hemingway stadium in Oxford after he and others were believed responsible for "throwing items and general unruly behavior."

Barnes would not leave, and an altercation followed. Potts wouldn't comment on the altercation, saying it was still under review.

Barnes was then removed from the stands, taken to the security stand and given medical attention by personnel from Baptist Hospital. After he was treated, evaluated and released, Barnes was arrested and charged with public drunkenness, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and assaulting a police officer. A photo taken by police shortly after the incident shows Barnes smiling, with his left eye open. Half of his left eyebrow is covered with gauze, held in place by tape.

According to the statement, Barnes was processed and photographed and "turned over to personnel from transport to the Lafayette County Detention Center."

Potts said "The university cannot speak to what might have transpired after Barnes was no longer in custody."

Potts said the Federal Bureau of Investigation was called to "independently investigate and assess the case."

On Nov. 21, a video surfaced online of Barnes in an altercation with officers.

The video appears to show a verbal fight between Barnes and officers before an officer makes physical contact with Barnes. In a social media post accompanying the video, Barnes' wife, Holly, accused law enforcement of declining to give Barnes medical attention and causing Barnes' concussion.

"My husband, a two time Veteran of the US Army National Guard, was wrongfully assaulted on campus during the Ole Miss vs LSU game by a POLICE OFFICER," the post read. "He was hit twice in the face and then arrested. THEY DID NOT GIVE HIM MEDICAL ATTENTION," she wrote. "Four hours later once he posted bail, he asked his friends to take him to the ER. He was diagnosed with a concussion, fractures to his orbital wall and maxillary sinus and contusions to the tissues of his eyes."

A picture of Barnes, bloody and his left eye swollen shut was posted as well. In the statement released Friday, Potts added that the University Police Department will "conduct an analysis of the practice of hiring temporary/part-time officers and ensure UPD is following recognized best practices."

Authorities did not return calls for additional comment.
