STARKVILLE -- Tight end B.J. Hammond is no longer on Mississippi State's football team, the school confirmed to the Clarion-Ledger on Wednesday. The news was first reported by 247Sports.

Hammond was a redshirt sophomore, who played in two games during his career. He didn't record any statistics in his time on the field against South Alabama and Vanderbilt last year.

Hammond, once a three-star prospect from Gadsden, Alabama, entered the spring competing for a backup role at tight end behind Gus Walley. Darrion Hutcherson won the backup spot in camp. True freshman Justin Johnson emerged from summer camp as the backup. It left Hammond as a fourth-team player.
