Jackson Police have confirmed that an ambulance has been stolen from St. Dominic Hospital and was recovered in Scott County.

The ambulance is owned by Pafford EMS, was allegedly taken by a patient, who tried to escape on I-55.

JPD spokeswoman Colendula Green said the ambulance was left running and someone jumped in and allegedly stole it 7:08 p.m.

Pafford Director of Operations Clay Hobbs said the patient was able to push past a paramedic through the side door of the ambulance and take off in it.

The ambulances are equipped with GPS, so Pafford officials were able to stay in contact with police while the suspect was on the run, Hobbs said.

There was no damage to the ambulance, but Hobbs said the company's main concern is that there were no injuries.

"We're glad he's in custody and he can't endanger anyone else. That's our number one concern is that the public is safe," he said.
