Stanley Alexander, seen here presenting his closing arguments in the trial of Elicia Hughes at the Hinds County Courthouse in Jackson, has qualified to run for district attorney.

Stanley Alexander has formally qualified to run for Hinds County District Attorney.

Alexander is an Assistant Attorney General and the Director of the Public Integrity Division of the Mississippi Attorney General's office.

In the press release announcing his qualification, he said Hinds County needs a DA who will "work productively with all law enforcement agencies" and who makes "prosecution of violent offenders a priority."

"The Hinds County detention center will no longer be used as a long term correctional facility but as a temporary holding facility as it was intended," Alexander said.

"We need the kind of leadership that can fight for Hinds County. We need a strong voice in the District Attorney's office that understands that crime can not and will not be a norm in Hinds County anymore," Alexander said in a press release.

Alexander, a Democrat, is a graduate of the University of Mississippi law school.

The primary election is scheduled for Aug. 4.
